EARLY LIFE
Born in Bombay, which today is known as Mumbai, Ratan Tata studied at the Campion School, Mumbai till his 8th class, followed by Cathedral and John Connon School, Mumbai and at Bishop Cotton School in Shimla.
In 1995 he graduated from Riverdale Country School in New York City, received a degree in Architecture from Cornell University in 1959 and attended the seven-week Advanced Management Program of Harvard Business School in 1975.

Ratan Tata’s first major business venture was to try and save Group company National Radio and Electronics which he initially did before it collapsed during an economic slowdown.
In 1991 he took over the family business and began to re-form the board of directors and company heads, some of whom were very powerful at the time.
During the 21 years he led the Tata Group, revenues grew over 40 times, and profit, over 50 times.
When he exited the company on 28th December 2012, Tata Group has many influential names under its arm including Jaguar Land-Rover, Tetley, Corus, Tata Steel and Tata Motors.
FAMILY
Ratan tata’s biological maternal grandmother had been the sister of Hirabai Tata, wife of group founder Jamshedji Tata while his biological grandfather, Hormusji Tata, had belonged to the broader Tata family.
His father was named Naval Tata and his mother, Sonoo with them separating 1948 when Ratan was 10 years old.
His grandmother, Navajbai Tata, formally adopted him through the J. N. Petit Parsi Orphanage and he has a half-brother named Noel Tata.
