1. Tourist Destination
France is the worlds busiest tourist destination with over 83 million visitors arriving in the country in 2014. The country features some of the most famous tourist attractions in the world including the Eiffel tower and Notre Dam Cathedral.
2. Largest Country
France is currently the largest country in the European Union and is also known as the hexagon, with an area of 551,000 square feet, its almost a 5th of the EU’s total area.
3. Louis the 19th
Louis the 19th holds the record for the shortest reign in world history at just 20 minutes after abdicating the throne following the death of his father Charles the 10th.
4. French Army
The French army was one of the first to use camouflage in war and this was present in world war 1 where guns and vehicles were painted by people called camouflagers
5. Marry The Dead
What a lot of people may not know is that you can actually marry a dead person in France. This wacky law has to be approved by the French president and you must also be able to prove that the dead person wanted to marry you before you died.
6. Supermarket Food
France became one of the first countries in the world to ban the destruction of unsold food in supermarkets. From 2016 they must now give all spare food to charities or food banks.
7. French Border
At least 1 million people living near the border with Italy speak Italian and French is currently the second most spoken language in Europe, with this expected to be number one by 2025.
8. Worlds Oldest Woman
The oldest woman in the world to have lived was indeed French. Jeanne Louise Calment was born on 21 February 1875 and died on 4 August 1997 spanning an incredible 122 years and 164 days.
9. Europe’s Highest Mountain
Europe’s highest mountain is in the French Alps, mount blanc stands at 4,810m, and it takes 10 to 12 hours to climb to the summit. One of Europe’s most popular ski resorts, Cormeyur sits on its slopes.
France produces nearly one billion tons of cheese a year and this comes in over 1200 different variety’s. Its goats cheese dates back to 500AD and its blue veined Roquefort has been made since 1070.
